Flu Information

Filed under: Seasonal, Wellness — EastHillsPeds @ 11:50 am

As you all know the flu is here.  So too are colds, bronchitis, strep, and the usual fall G.I. bugs that cause vomiting & diarrhea.  We are busy!!  We are trying very hard to see as many of our patients as possible.

Symptoms of the H1N1 flu are similar to those of seasonal flu.  We are being told that the only flu that is active just now is the H1N1 flu.  Symptoms include the following: Fever, Cough, Headache, Body aches, Runny Nose, Sore throat, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.  If your child has these symptoms they need to stay home until after they have been free of fever for 24 hours and they should avoid contact with other people.

If you have a child with these symptoms and they have asthma, diabetes, heart problems or are being treated for serious diseases  you should have your child seen by one of our providers.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD BE SEEN IN THE EMGENCY ROOM?

If your child has these symptoms:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids (infrequent urination – fewer than one urination in 10 hours or wet diaper in 8 to 10 hours)
  • Not waking up or interacting when aroused
  • Crankiness, doesn’t want to be held or consoled
  • Flu-like symptoms that get better but come back with a fever and a cough that is worse
  • Fever with a rash

Our phone nurses are receiving a record number of calls so PLEASE be patient.  If your call is not urgent leave your message and we’ll call you back in the order in which it was received.  If you have an urgent call let our operator know and we’ll get someone to take your call.  If you have an emergency call 911.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this busy time.
